Taking action for smart cities offers an unprecedented opportunity to use new technologies to improve the livability, sustainability and connections of the places we live and work in the long term. The smart city movement, which brings innovations such as transportation systems, energy and environment, health and social care, offers citizens the opportunity to live in a safe city connected with data-enabled products and services in expanding cities.
Smart LED Lighting Solutions
By using LED street lighting solutions instead of traditional lighting solutions, 50-70% energy saving is achieved. Furthermore, by combining these solutions with smart systems, it is possible to save 80% of energy. With the proliferation of energy-efficient, smart LED street lighting systems, cities’ lighting networks can be developed with data-based systems. Implementing a LED street lighting program connected via a mobile network with a central management system (CMS) can instantly benefit cities by providing remote control and monitoring of lighting assets for city administrators.
- Lighting products can be planned individually or in groups remotely, dimmed or turned on / off.
- Provides energy consumption data.
- It provides powerful analytics to monitor and improve street lighting system performance.
- It allows integration with future smart city initiatives.
- It reduces maintenance costs with the data they provide.
CASE: Los Angeles Smart LED Lighting
With a program that started in 2009, Los Angeles began to adopt LED street lighting systems relatively early. Up to now, 180,000 LED street lights have been installed in the city, thereby saving 65% energy. This energy saving of 65% has led to an annual cost savings of $10 million and a reduction of 65,000 metric tons of CO2 in the city.
And in 2015, Los Angeles started smart city initiatives. The city has installed 100 smart street lights that integrate LED lighting and 4G LTE wireless connectivity. This allowed the city to expand its bandwidth without having to build more cell towers. It is aimed to deploy 500 smarter street lights in the next four years in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles smart city is constantly evolving with pilot programs that place various monitors and sensors on street lights to assess environmental factors such as noise, traffic levels and pollution in the city. This data can be used to drive more innovations, such as traffic flow management plans, air pollution initiatives and health planning.
Why Cities Should be Prepared for Smart LED Systems?
Cities should not postpone implementing LED street lighting programs in order to avoid “waiting costs” due to uncertainties in smart city initiatives. Cities can switch to LED street lighting systems and start working on a smart city strategy when budgets allow.
In short, if cities choose to postpone the launch of LEDs, they will not be able to benefit from sudden and significant energy savings of 50-70%. Ensuring that the systems are forward-looking can prevent unnecessary delays.
As Fermada LED Lighting, we are ready for this digital revolution!
Fermada LED Street Luminaires have been developed as LED road lighting luminaires that can replace sodium luminaire luminaires used in road and street lighting, have high savings, can be controlled from the center, whose brightness level and similar environmental conditions can be controlled and the light intensity can be adjusted. The electricity consumed for park, garden and street lighting has a very high share of 2.5% of our total consumption. Even saving 1% of energy in energy consumption means that 500 MW less investment should be made in the next year. For this reason, it is important to carry out studies to increase efficiency in lighting systems.
